SHINABERY SIGNS WITH MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST

One of the more difficult roles on any team is being able to do many things and do them all well. Unless you're Alexa Shinabery, that is. Marion's senior volleyball player filled in the gaps and gave her team a lift whenever it needed it over the past four seasons, and as a result, she will continue her volleyball career at Mississippi Gulf Coast College in Perkinston, Mississippi. “When I visited them, it just felt like home to me,” said Shinabery following her signing ceremony last week. “I really hit it off with the coaches, the players and I got along. I just think it's the best place for me.” “The best thing about Alexa has always been her attitude and willingness to do whatever you asked her to do,” said Marion head volleyball coach Lisa Beasley. “She did things when you asked her, how you asked her, and never complained. She's been such a bright light for us on and off the floor. I don't know what we are going to do without her, but we are all incredibly proud of her.” Shinabery twice earned all-conference honors in her four-year varsity career, and she exits Marion with 795 career digs, 484 serving points, 452 kills, 91 aces, 63 career assists, and 54 blocks. Her teams finished 93-28 from 2021-2024 with conference championships in three of the four seasons and another conference runner-up finish. The Patriots advanced to the state semifinals once with two more appearances in the state quarterfinals in her four years. The senior also landed on the AVCA Best and Brightest list, earned AHSCA and QOTH All-Star honors, and was a Team Captain. “This program has meant so much to me, I'll never forget it,” said Shinabery. “I'm so thankful for my coaches and friends I've made along the way.” “Her athleticism is scary,” said Beasley. “She often makes something out of nothing She's dependable, hard-working, selfless, generous, a great teammate. Those characteristics are every coach's dream.” Shinabery will be part of Mississippi Gulf Coast's first volleyball team in the fall of 2025. The Bulldogs will play inside Dantzler Arena and a renovated Weathers-Wentzell Center and it will compete in a nine-team MACCC league. Shayna Welch will be the first volleyball coach of Mississippi Gulf Coast.
