Seven MHS baseballers earn awards

SEVEN MHS BASEBALLERS EARN AWARDS

Seven Marion baseball players garnered postseason honors this spring after leading the Patriots to a 20-9 overall record, a conference runner-up finish, and the school's seventh straight state tournament appearance. Senior shortstop Matthew Kearney earned a second straight all-state selection in 2024, while junior starting pitcher also landed on the all-state list after an all-league appearance one season ago. Seniors Trey Fleming, Landon Miller, and Davis York joined junior Carson Catt and freshman Max Molloy on the All-5A East team. Kearney capped his Marion career this fall by surpassing the 100-hit mark in his career, along with more than 70 runs. He ranked second among Marion's full-time starters this spring with a .366 batting average, and he led the way with a .523 on-base percentage. He was tops with 30 hits, 26 stolen bases, four triples, two home runs, and 35 runs scored. He also registered 13 RBI from the lead-off spot. As the team's starting shortstop, he led the way with eight double plays. Kearney finished his career as Marion's only representative on the 2024 Class 5A state tournament team after logging two hits in the tournament's opening round against Maumelle. Bumbaugh earned all-state honors this season after crafting one of the more dominant pitching runs in school history. The junior right-hander finished 7-3 on the bump while allowing just five earned runs all season. The Central Arkansas commit's 40 innings pitched was second on the staff, while his 75 strikeouts and .875 ERA led the way. He was 6-1 in 2024 conference starts, firing three no-hitters, and he fired three other one-hitters against 5A East competition. He helped his cause at the plate with four doubles, a triple, and eight RBI with eight runs. Fleming moved into the district summer of 2023 and he locked down a starting outfield slot entering the 2024 season. The Texas native batted .304 with a .385 OBP this season, scoring 19 runs, stealing 19 bases, and driving in 11 runs. In the outfield, he committed just one error to finish with a fielding percentage of .938. Miller earned the team's starting catching job over the winter and started most of the games behind the plate while batting .322 with a .413 OBP. His 28 hits were third on the team, with 10 of them going for extra bases. He drove in 16 runs and walked 11 times. The senior made just three errors behind the plate this season, finishing with a .986 field percentage, which was third on the team. York earned his all-league honors after contributing at the plate, on the mound, and in the field. The Arkansas-Little Rock signee was third on the pitching staff in most categories, including 27.2 innings pitched and 38 strikeouts. He walked only nine batters in 2024 and surrendered just eight earned runs. York batted in the middle of the order this spring, finishing with a .362 batting average with a .460 OBP. His 29 hits were second on the club, including a team-high 10 doubles and 22 RBI. His 18 runs were good for second on the team. When he wasn't pitching, he anchored first base and finished first among all regulars with a .991 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 2024. Catt followed up his 2023 all-conference nod with another one this season. The junior right-hander threw a staff-high 40.1 innings this spring, and he finished second in strikeouts. At the dish, he batted. 282 with a .342 OBP, and he stroked two doubles, scored 15 runs, and recorded nine RBI. He made just two errors to finish with a .953 fielding percentage. Molloy locked a starting role early in 2024 and never looked back, leading the Pats with a .375 batting average and a .506 OBP. He finished with 24 hits, including six doubles, two triples, and a home run. His 20 RBI were second on the club. He committed just one error this spring, good for a .947 fielding percentage.
