YORK SIGNS WITH LITTLE ROCK
Marion senior Davis York tends to stand out in a crowd.
The six-foot-four-inch right-hander towers over almost every MHS student, even more so when he takes the mound.
York's size, strength, and arm talent have combined to make him a fascinating recruit over the past two years, a pursuit that he ended on Thursday morning when York signed a national letter of intent to pitch for the Little Rock Trojans.
“I was kind of glad to get this whole thing out of the way,” said York. “It's been a moment I've been looking forward to these past few years, and I'm glad to have it done where I can focus on other things.”
York exploded onto the scene as a freshman, anchoring the 2021 junior varsity's pitching staff with rare ability as a two-way guy.
He earned varsity innings as a sophomore for the 2022 Class 5A state champions, even earning the victory in Marion's opening-round state tournament victory over White Hall.
“He's been a guy coming up through the program who always just had a ton of talent,” said Marion baseball coach Pete Prater. “He had a real good year for us his sophomore year.”
York broke camp in 2023 as one of Marion's two conference starters, but he threw his last pitch of the season on April 4 against Nettleton due to an arm injury before returning later in the spring as a position player.
“He's a real good kid, and we hope he can bounce back for us this year,” said Prater. “He's taking his role in the program much more seriously as he gets closer to college. His attitude has been different this year, he gets guys moving. That's been a real positive this off-season.”
In addition to his efforts at Marion, York also travels most of the year playing travel baseball for some of the better regional programs around.
“I'm maybe home two or three weeks during the summer,” said York. “It's always baseball, baseball, baseball for me.”
Little Rock finished the 2023 season 31-23 overall and 14-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Last year's Trojans picked up midseason victories over the University of Arkansas, Central Arkansas, and Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Little Rock plays its home games at Gary Hogan Field.
“I was really focused on staying close to home, at least the best I could,” said York. “I'm really close to my family, and that's a really big deal for us. So with it only being two hours or so was a big deal.”
