UNBEATEN PATS ROLL TITANS

JACKSONVILLE--- People wondered how Marion's offense would continue to evolve after the graduation of Donnie Cheers, III following his historic career. Through three weeks, the results may have exceeded even the most positive Patriot fan's wildest dreams. Marion outgained Jacksonville 411-168 last Friday night, and the Pats scored on five consecutive first-half possessions, turning a 42-6 halftime lead into a 48-13 victory. The Pats are 3-0 for the first time since 2018, and Marion is 2-0 in league action for the second straight year. Marion returns home this week when it hosts Greene County Tech for homecoming. Homecoming festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff lined up for 7 p.m. The teams swapped turnovers to open play as Marion quarterback Ashton Gray lost a fumble on the first possession, but when senior linebacker Victor Turner intercepted a pass, the Pats were set up with first and 10 from the Jacksonville (0-3 overall, 0-2 6A East) 41. Marion cashed that turnover five plays later when Gray ran 13 yards to open the scoring for a 7-0 Patriot bulge. The game changed dramatically later in the first period and early in the second stanza when Marion scored four TDs in a span of 13 snaps. Gray gave Marion a 14-0 on the second of the Pats' next possession, hitting Mitrell Lewis for a 58-yard TD toss with 3:34 left in the first quarter. Marion's next possession lasted just 3 plays, covering 15 yards, and the Pats hit paydirt when Jamar Foster ran through a pair of tackles at the goal line from 3 yards out for a score and a 21-0 Patriot advantage. Following the Marion defense's third straight three and out, the Pats took over at the Titan 46-yard line, and Jalen Smith cashed it in 3 plays later, scoring from 39 yards out for a 28-0 lead that doubled as the score after a quarter. Marion's lead swelled to 35-0 on the Pats' first possession of the second stanza, when Gray connected with Christian Young for a 32-yard TD toss with 8:37 left in the first half. Jacksonville got on the scoreboard on the following drive when QB Kentrell Thompson weaved in and around the Marion defense, setting sail for a 47-yard TD run, but a missed extra point froze the score at 35-6 with 6:02 left in the first half. Jacksonville forced a Marion turnover on the ensuing drive, but the Pats scored just before halftime when Foster scored from 4 yards out for a 42-6 lead at the break to trigger the sportsmanship rule. Marion's Kejaris Hill returned a Titan fumble 56 yards for a score for the third period's only score and the Pats led 48-6 entering the fourth quarter. Thompson capped the scoring when he covered the final 14 yards for a TD midway through the fourth quarter. Marion rushed for 229 yards and passed for 182 yards, while each team committed a pair of turnovers. Marion converted four of its six third-down attempts while Jacksonville managed just four of 11. Gray completed five of 10 passes at Jacksonville for 142 yards and two TDs, and he rushed for 68 yards and a score. Junior tailback Jalen Smith paced the Patriot rushing attack, carrying seven times for 97 yards and a TD. Two of Jamar Foster's carries went for scores as he totaled 23 rush yards on the night. Seven Marion receivers caught passes at Jacksonville, led by Young's two catches for 53 yards and a score. Senior Star linebacker Victor Turner stacked six tackles and an interception, while Javen Griffin recorded five stops. Sophomores Brian Benford and Solomon Flores stacked three tackles apiece.
