MARION SLAMS SENATOBIA

Marion had every tool in its arsenal working last Thursday afternoon in a non-conference tune-up game against Senatobia, Mississippi. For starters, Marion senior southpaw Anna Murphy fired four hitless innings at the Warriors in a 13-0 victory. Not to be outdone, the Marion offense manufactured 13 hits and 13 runs, with four players recording multiple hits. The Patriots improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the 5A East by scoring in all four at-bats of the run-rule-shortened decision over the Warriors. Three strikeouts punctuated Murphy's dazzling start. The senior retired the first nine batters she faced on Thursday, and the only Warrior to reach base did so by using an error. Two-time all-state centerfielder Mckenzie Shinabery (1-3 against Senatobia with two runs, an RBI, and a walk) sparked the Marion offense in the bottom of the first when she singled, stole second, and scored on Brianna Morquecho's (3-4 with two runs and an RBI) RBI single for a 1-0 Marion advantage. Murphy (2-3 batting) helped her own cause in the bottom of the second when she singled and gave way to courtesy runner Alexis Jones, who stole second and scored on sophomore Chloe Miller's (1-3 with two RBI and a run scored) ground out. Marion blew it open in the home half of the third when the Pats struck for three more runs. Morquecho got it going when she singled and stole second and third before Kelsey Baker (2-4 with four RBI and two runs scored) delivered Morquecho when Baker reached on an error. An Anna Hitchman (1-3 with two RBI and a run) double delivered Baker for a 4-0 Marion bulge, and senior catcher Jacey Holder (2-3 with two RBI) drove in Hitchman with a single. Eight of the first nine Marion batters reached in what proved to be the decisive fourth inning, and Morquecho and Baker again sparked a rally when they each singled leading off that frame. Hitchman delivered Morquecho with a ground out for the first out of the fourth, and Kelsey Eppes delivered Baker with a single for a 7-0 Patriot advantage. Holder delivered Eppes with a hit just before Murphy split the gap with a double. With the bases loaded, Miller reached on an error to score sophomore Maddie Cupples for a 9-0 Marion lead, which quickly swelled to 10-0 when Shinabery walked to force home Jones. Baker delivered the final blow when her double scored Supriya Chowdhury, Miller, and Shinabery for the final tallies. WHAT'S NEXT? Marion hosts Paragould on Tuesday afternoon for a 5A East doubleheader at Marion Sports Complex.
