FIVE MARION ATHLETES PARTAKE IN SIGNING DAY
Marion High School held its annual signing day ceremony last week, and this year's event featured four athletes who will continue their athletic careers at the next level.
Senior basketball Aaliyah Taylor signed with Garden City College in Garden City, Kansas, while football seniors Jakobe Smith and Carter Waldo both signed with Fort Hays University in Hays, Kansas. Senior defensive end Antanius Tiggs agreed to a preferred walk-on spot at Arkansas State University. Marion senior Donnie Cheers, III was also honored at the ceremony following his signing in December with Southeast Missouri State.
Taylor spent the past two seasons on Marion's girls basketball team, earning the reputation as one of the team's top three-point shooters. The senior guard connected on four three-point shots earlier this season against mighty Little Rock Central before scoring a game-high 19 points in Marion's key January road win at Paragould. Marion advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals during Taylor's junior season.
Waldo lettered for four seasons at Marion, the first player since the 1950s to do so. The senior earned all-state honors in 2022 after racking up 60 tackles despite missing three games due to injury. The Team Captain exits Marion with 201 tackles, including 18 for losses. His scoop and score against Sylvan Hills last fall proved to be the deciding score in a 27-23 Marion victory.
Smith established himself as a starter at cornerback during his sophomore season and capped his career last fall by earning all-conference honors. The senior Team Captain started 26 of the final 27 games of his varsity career, racking up 96 career tackles, including seven TFLs, with three interceptions.
Tiggs rotated heavily in his junior season at an end, finishing with five TFLs and two sacks. As a full-time starter in 2022, the senior playmaker finished with 45 stops, four TFLs, and a sack.
