HUGE RUN PUSHES NO. 1 PATS PAST PIONEERS

BATESVILLE --- While the Marion Patriots have proven impressive so far in the 2022-2023 schedule, one could argue that prior to their date in Batesville Tuesday night the team hadn't yet enjoyed its signature moment. That all changed in Independence County's Pioneer Gymnasium, however. Top-ranked Marion seamlessly meshed offense and defense on the road all night long, highlighted by a 34-1 run that bridged the second and third quarters, including 22 consecutive second-quarter points. It added up to a 65-27 Marion victory at Batesville that keeps the Pats in the driver's seat for the 5A East title and subsequent No. 1 playoff seed in this season's state tournament in Pine Bluff. "Our man-to-man defense has been really good all year long," said Marion coach David Clark. "We knew what we had there. Tonight, we wanted to see if we could execute some other concepts, and for the most part, we did well." Marion's (15-5 overall, 4-0 5A East) defensive dominance featured 23 turnovers, just 10 made field goals, and a 39-19 rebounding advantage at Batesville (4-16, 0-4). Marion junior Kayden Nesbitt powered the Pats to a fast start in the first quarter by scoring five points with five boards, and the visitors enjoyed a 13-8 lead after the initial period. That set the stage for a Marion jam session in the second stanza. The Patriots limited the Pioneers to 0-of-5 shooting from the floor in the second quarter while forcing nine turnovers. The Patriot defense stood out, and the Marion offense outscored the Pioneers 22-1 in the second quarter, making 10 of 22 shots from the floor, and recording nine offensive rebounds. The run began when Nesbitt scored on a layup early in the frame before layups from Donnie Cheers, III, and Jalen White forced a Batesville timeout. Following the stoppage, Cheers connected on a three-pointer from the wing, Nesbitt, Martavius Davis, White, and Lyndell Buckingham converted layups, and by the time Buckingham and David Brewer made mid-range jumpers, the Marion lead was 35-8 with 1:08 left in the second stanza. A Cory Cothrine free throw with 14.8 seconds left in the frame doubled as the first Batesville point since 46.6 seconds remained in the first quarter, and the Pats enjoyed a 35-9 lead at halftime. The halftime horn did little to slow the Pats as Marion scored the first 12 points of the second half to put the game out of reach. Cheers and Buckingham scored four points apiece in that stretch as Marion marched to a 48-9 lead. Marion took its largest lead of the night (51-11) when Buckingham made a pair of free throws with 4:04 remaining in the third, and the Pats settled for a 52-23 lead entering the fourth quarter. Marion junior guard Jermiah Miller sparked the Pats with seven points in the fourth quarter. Cheers paced Marion with 13 points, while Nesbitt hit for 10 points and 12 rebounds, and White added 10 points, eight boards, and three blocks. Matthew Hendrix bolstered Batesville with 10 points, while Rafael Thomas scored nine. WHAT'S NEXT The Marion boys play just their second home game of the season on Friday night when they host Greene County Tech (17-4, 1-3) at Fidelity Bank Arena. The girls game will tip around 6 p.m., followed by the guys game at approximately 7:30. The game will be broadcast live on MarionPatriots.com. RANKINGS RUNDOWN Marion remains No. 1 in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's weekly Class 5A "Super Six" rankings. Pine Bluff (12-6), Lake Hamilton (16-2), Nettleton (13-5), Maumelle (13-8), and Vilonia (15-4) round out the rest of the top six. Marion is ranked No. 6 in the ADG's overall Top 10 rankings, behind Jonesboro (15-3) and in front of Springdale (15-4). Marion is No. 7 in ScoreBookLive.com's weekly Top 25 ranking. CLARK GETS RESULTS Marion's rout Tuesday night at Batesville doubled as Head Coach David Clark's 99th victory at the school. Clark boasts a sterling 99-34 record since arriving in time for the 2018-2019 season, good for a 74 percent winning percentage. Clark's teams have finished with a winning record in all five of his previous seasons, with three trips to the semifinals or better, and two appearances in the state championship game. Clark's 2018-2019 club finished 25-3 and ran the table for the 5A East league title en route to that season's Class 5A state championship. 5A EAST RESULTS FROM JANUARY 17 Marion 65, Batesville 27 Nettleton 78, Paragould 73 Searcy 69, Greene Co.
