MARION JUMPS MOUNTAIN HOME, MOVES TO QUARTERFINALS

GREENBRIER --- Coaches in every sport preach the idea of peaking at the right time. Judging by her team's impressive victory Tuesday afternoon over old rival Mountain Home at the Panther Pit in Greenbrier, Marion head volleyball coach Lisa Beasley might have figured out how to push the right buttons at the best possible time. Marion improved to 19-10 overall with its 13th victory in its last 17 outings in a three-set conquest of Mountain Home (25-14, 25-14, and 25-22). The second-seeded Patriots advance to Wednesday's state quarterfinal round against top-ranked Benton at Panther Pavilion on the campus of Greenbrier High School. The Benton contest will be broadcast live on MarionPatriots.com/broadcasts and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app. That game will begin at noon. "I was really happy with how we started out today," said Beasley. "I wasn't sure what to expect with so many young players and this being their first state tournament, but we played about as well as have all year long in the first two sets. The third set we were up and down, but made enough plays to win. I'm just super proud and happy right now because we played really, really well." Marion and Mountain Home split the initial six points of the first set before Marion took the lead for good on a Bomber double tap. A block by senior Meredith Williams regained the serve for the Patriots, which set the table for Alexa Shinabery to serve. All the sophomore on her birthday was serve three aces during a run of seven consecutive Marion points for an 11-5 advantage. When Maggie Miller served an ace of her own, Marion led 17-8 as Mountain Home called time to try and stop the bleeding. Back-to-back blocks from Williams and Kennedy Bullins gave Marion a 22-13 advantage and the Pats clinched the first-set winner when Rucker rerouted a Mountain Home kill. The second set was all Marion from the jump, as the Pats ripped off the first eight points as Rucker and Madison Allison racked up two kills apiece. Two more Allison kills gave the Pats a 14-7 lead, while Bullins and Rucker logged a pair of kills for consecutive points to give Marion a 17-11 lead to force a Mountain Home timeout. Allison looked to close out Mountain Home down the stretch, recording two kills and two blocks as Marion won 25-14 for the second stanza in a row. Mountain Home mounted a rally facing elimination in the third set. The nip-and-tuck frame saw the teams split the first 28 points when Marion got kills from Shinabery and Allison, while a pair of errors gave the Pats an 18-14 lead as Mountain Home signaled for time. The Bombers worked within two points four times down the stretch, and one point once, but Marion had the answers as Shinabery, Bullins, and Rucker logged kills before a Mountain Home double tap call gave the Patriots victory.
