MARION DOWNS JONESBORO FOR 18TH VICTORY

JONESBORO --- Marion capped its regular season with a victory over what may be its biggest volleyball rival. The Patriots spoiled Jonesboro's senior night with a straight-sets conquest (25-21, 27-25, and 25-21) at Don Riggs Hurricane Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Marion concludes its regular season with an 18-10 overall record and 10-4 in the 5A East. Marion logged its third consecutive victory over Jonesboro dating back to last season. The Patriots open their run at the Class 5A state tournament Tuesday at 2 p.m. when they play another historic rival, Mountain Home, in Greenbrier. Every Marion state volleyball tournament game will be broadcast live on MarionPatriots.com/broadcasts and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app. The opening set at Jonesboro was nip and tuck in the early rounds until Marion scored three of four points on a pair of kills from Kennedy Bullins and a kill from Alexa Shinabery to take an 11-7 lead and force a Jonesboro timeout. The stoppage did little to slow Marion as Maggie Miller dished a pair of assists to Meredith Williams, which preceded a Shinabery ace, and another Bullins kill. Two Jonesboro errors later and Marion had established a 17-7 lead. Marion continued its surge with a Bullins kill and ace, and when Madison Allison pounded a kill, Marion was back in front 22-12 as Jonesboro called for time. Jonesboro rallied back, but Marion closed out the hosts when Kiah Rucker registered a block and Jonesboro committed a service error to give the Pats a 25-21 victory in the lid-lifter. The second set was tight all the way, featuring seven ties. Bullins continued her good play from the first set when she turned an accurate Miller pass into kills four times, while Rucker logged two kills as Marion bolted to an 8-5 lead. Leading 13-12, Miller took center stage, handing out four assists, while registering a kill and an ace to give Marion a 19-13 lead to force a Jonesboro timeout. Jonesboro got even with Marion at 23, but the Pats kept the Golden Hurricane at bay when Bullins logged a kill, a Jonesboro kill went long, and a Rucker kill gave Marion a victory by a slim 27-25 margin. Jonesboro didn't back down facing elimination in the third set. The Golden Hurricane scored first and led by as many as four (12-8) when Marion called for time. Marion hit the comeback trail when Allison registered a pair of kills while Rucker logged one, and the Pats tied the match at 17 when Bullins recorded the last of her three consecutive kills. Rucker took the lead down the stretch, recording kills on three of four Marion points, the last giving the visitors a 23-20 lead.
