MARION MERCY RULES SEARCY

SEARCY --- No matter the stat, one would have to agree that Marion manhandled Searcy on Friday night at Lion Stadium. The Patriots outgained the Lions 508-303 in total yardage. Marion won the turnover battle 4-1, including a Martevon Banks pick-six in the first half. The Marion defense limited Searcy to six of 15 third-down conversions. It added up to a 57-28 Marion victory, the first mercy rule conquest this season for the Patriots. It marks Marion's first mercy rule win since 2021's 42-21 victory over Russellville in the opening round of the state playoffs. It was the Pats' first road mercy-rule victory since beating Sheridan 42-12 last October. “Searcy has been in a lot of games this year,” said Marion head coach Lance Clark. “They've been able to score a lot of points and have pretty much moved the ball on anybody. That was really encouraging to see. It's the best our offense has played this year by a mile. To come out here and mercy rule Searcy at Searcy is really nice.” Marion (4-2 overall, 4-1 6A East) tweaked its defense while preparing for Searcy (1-5, 1-4) hoping to “create more havoc,” explained Clark. The results were those four turnovers and an overall defensive effort that prevented the Lions from meeting their season average, while Marion surrendered only 21 points prior to the mercy rule. Complementary football ruled the day, beginning with Banks' interception of a deflected third-down pass late in the first quarter before he outran the Lion offense to the end zone to give Marion a 13-7 lead that doubled as the tally after the opening frame. The second Marion turnover occurred after the Pats had taken a 29-14 lead in the second quarter when safety Kendal Brister stripped Searcy's Kade Ivy and returned it to the Lion 19-yard-line. It took the Pats five plays to cash it in when junior quarterback Ashton Gray connected with sophomore receiver Mitrell Lewis for a 4-yard TD and a 35-14 Marion lead. Marion's defense forced a three-and-out on Searcy's next possession, and the Pats wasted little time taking advantage as Gray found a streaking Donnie Cheers behind the Lion secondary for a 69-yard TD pass and a 43-14 lead. Marion led 43-21 at halftime. Senior cornerback Jakobe Smith came up with his second interception in three weeks on the initial drive of the third quarter, and when sophomore tailback Jalen Smith capped a seven-play, 56-yard drive with a 2-yard TD plunge, Marion led 49-21. The Pats triggered the mercy rule late in the third quarter when Smith scored from 10 yards out, followed by a Gray-to-Cheers two-point conversion that pushed the Pats in front 57-21. “I'd liked to have seen us have a little bit better killer instinct,” admitted Clark. “We had some opportunities there that we didn't capitalize on. But in the end, we were pretty happy with a lot of what we saw.” Gray started the scoring on the second play of the game when he eluded Searcy tacklers en route to a 61-yard TD run and a 7-0 Marion lead with 11:32 left in the first quarter. Marion took a 21-7 lead with 8:41 left in the second quarter when Gray connected with Cheers for a 71-yard TD pass. The Pats earned a 29-14 lead midway through the second period when senior Brian Weatherspoon recorded a 3-yard TD plunge before Gray connected with Cheers for the two-point conversion. Gray had arguably his best game at Searcy, completing 16 of 21 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, all of which establish his career highs. Smith carried 25 times for 165 yards and two scores, while Cheers snagged seven passes for 203 yards and two scores. Junior linebacker Dewayne Williams topped the Marion tackle chart with nine tackles, while Smith and sophomore Kendrick Cauley each recorded six stops. WHAT'S NEXT? Marion hosts West Memphis on Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. That contest will be broadcast live on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app. The game will be preceded by the Fred Leonard State Farm Hometown Showdown. CHEERS CHASING HISTORY With his sixth touchdown catch in three weeks, Cheers continues to scale Marion's all-time receiving list. The senior has caught 75 passes in his career for 1,571 yards and 19 touchdowns. Cheers passed Joyrion Chase for second place in TD receptions at Searcy. Collin Chambers tops the Marion all-time receiving chart with 127 catches for 2,163 yards and 24 scores. FAST START Marion's 4-2 mark is its best since starting 4-2 in 2018. The 2018 Patriots finished the season 8-3 following a quarterfinal loss to Sylvan Hills. Prior to 2018, Marion had not started 4-2 or better since 2011 (started 5-1).
