DAVIS SIGNS WITH COFFEYVILLE CC
Not even the Covid-19 pandemic and injuries could slow down Marion senior Joshua Davis.
The determined Carter outpaced all adversity last week by signing a track scholarship with Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Davis did not run track until his sophomore year of 2019-2020, and after acclimating to the program well, the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the entire world in March 2020.
After turning in a strong junior track season, injuries have hampered Davis during his senior campaign, but a strong Coffeyville track program is excited to add the speedy senior.
“I'm just blessed really,” said Davis. “I thank God, my coaches, friends, family, and anyone else. Things have not gone exactly to plan, but Coffeyville went for upside with me, and I'm blessed for the opportunity.”
“He impressed us all as a sophomore during the off-season, he got ready to run, and Covid wiped out the whole season,” added Marion head track coach Terry Johnson.
Davis refocused and qualified for the state track tournament in two events as a junior, but a hamstring injury has limited him this spring.
Despite the injury, Coffeyville saw Davis's ability on film and still offered him.
“It's a great landing spot for him,” said Johnson. “Honestly, if you're not going right away to a big program, it's one of the better junior colleges for track, and he'll do really well there.”
“They called me as soon as I got hurt, but they said they still had a good amount of interest,” said Davis. “I was looking into the school and everything, and decided it was the best place for me.”
Davis will focus on the 400- and 200-meter relays when he arrives in Coffeyville, with an option for other relays, depending on how he progresses.
“He's always had a very high ceiling since he's been with us,” said Johnson. “He can do a little bit of everything for us. He's done the high jump. He just has a lot of intangibles going for him that a lot of guys just don't have."
