Marion goes 2-1 against non-league competition

MARION GOES 2-1 AGAINST NON-LEAGUE COMPETITION

The Marion Patriots went 2-1 in non-conference action late last week. Marion's record sits at 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the 5A East after a 7-5 victory last Thursday at Class 4A power Valley View, an 8-1 win on Saturday afternoon over Joe T. Robinson, and a 3-1 loss to Lonoke. The Patriots never trailed at Valley View (15-3 overall), striking for single runs in the first and second innings, and adding two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. Marion drew 13 walks at Valley View. Marion senior Chase Armstrong was 2-3 at the plate at Valley View, while also drawing a walk. Seniors Dylan Kight and Gage Watson each drove in a pair of runs. Second baseman Payton Voyles walked and scored three times, while Davis York scored a pair of runs. York started and worked 5.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs (three earned), to earn the victory. Jett Sutton relieved York and covered the final 1.1 innings and struck out three to register the save. Daxton Davis and Sutton combined to work all six innings against Lonoke on Saturday. Davis threw the first two innings, surrendering three hits and a pair of runs, while Sutton went the final four, allowing one hit and one unearned run. Kight and Voyles accounted for both of Marion's hits, while Kight and Armstrong drew a pair of walks. Voyles scored Marion's only run. Marion bounced back against Joe T. Robinson, scoring four times in the first, twice in the fourth, and adding single tallies in the third and the fifth. Connor Taylor went 2-3 with a pair of RBI against Robinson, while Armstrong was 1-3 with four RBI, two runs, and a walk. Matthew Kearney scored twice and walked, while Luke Bullins was 1-3 with an RBI and he scored a run. Carson Catt started and hurled four innings at Robinson, surrendering just three hits while striking out a pair. Watson pitched for the first time this season, going an inning and notching a strikeout. Gerrard allowed two hits and a run in one inning, while Armstrong surrendered a pair of hits and struck a batter out in his inning of work.
