PATRIOT PITCHING NIXES NETTLETON

The Marion Patriots took the Nettleton Raiders back to the dead-ball era on Tuesday afternoon at John Robbins Field at First National Bank of Eastern Arkansas Stadium. Looking to keep pace in 5A East action, Marion pitching surrendered just one base hit to sweep a conference doubleheader. Marion improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the 5A East after winning 7-0 and 7-0. In the opener, Marion seniors Chase “Smiley” Armstrong and Tyler McGinnis teamed up for a combined no-hitter. Armstrong, an Arkansas State signee, fired the first five innings of hitless ball, striking out seven and walking just two. McGinnis relieved Armstrong in the sixth and struck out three Raiders while issuing just one walk. In game No. 2, senior Ben “Sunshine” Gerrard teamed with junior Daxton Davis to limit the Raiders to a single hit over seven innings. Gerrard worked the initial five innings, striking out nine while surrendering a single hit and a walk before giving way to Davis, who tossed a pair of no-hit innings. Marion seniors Gage Watson and Payton Voyles each recorded two hits in the first game. Watson finished 2-4 with a pair of RBI, while Voyles went 2-3 with a run. Matthew Kearney and Jett Sutton reached base twice, scored a run, and drove in a run. Sutton's hit was a massive home run to left field in the fifth inning. Luke Bullins and Kaleb Catt each scored a run. The Patriots led Nettleton 1-0 just two batters into the opener when Dylan Kight walked and courtesy runner Carson Catt scored on a wild pitch. A Watson double plated Kearney for a 2-0 Marion lead. That tally held until the fourth, when Marion struck for four more tallies, including Bullins and Voyles scoring on the same wild pitch. Kearney's sacrifice fly plated Kaleb Catt, and Watson's single chased in Kight. Sutton's bomb capped the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Watson and Armstrong were the offensive standouts in the second game, each finishing 2-4. Watson scored twice and drove in a run in the nightcap, while Armstrong chased in three runs and scored once. Armstrong notched a double and a mammoth home run onto Rica Road to account for his production. Marion started the scoring when Connor Brinkley reached to open the third with a hit by pitch, followed by a Voyles single. Kaleb Catt chased in Brinkley with a single, which moved Voyles to second. A Watson groundout plated Voyles before Armstrong chased in Catt with a double. Watson led off the top of the sixth with a single before Armstrong unloaded on his round-tripper to deep left field for a 5-0 Marion advantage. Kearney scored on a throwing error in the seventh, and Kight knocked in Watson with a single to cap the scoring in the game. Marion plays Thursday at Valley View in a non-conference game and will play a varsity doubleheader on Saturday in Jonesboro. The Patriots return to conference action Tuesday afternoon at Paragould for a varsity doubleheader. Those contests will be streamed live on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
