MARION OUTLASTS JACKSONVILLE, ADVANCES TO SEMIS
SHERIDAN --- Marion senior guard Jessica Robins knew what she had to do as she caught the pass from teammate Kiera Neal.
Marion had trailed by as many as nine points three times in its Class 5A quarterfinal clash against outright 5A Central champion Jacksonville.
Jacksonville led by as many as six points with 2:52 left in regulation.
Still, Robins remained focused. She'd scored Marion's last nine points to get the Lady Pats within one with less than 12 seconds left on the clock.
The senior pushed the tempo and outran all but two Jacksonville Lady Titans who got back on defense. The left-hander drove with her dominant hand to the rim and hit a running layup with 5.8 seconds left to give Marion its first lead since 6-5 midway through the first quarter.
When Jacksonville's three-quarters-court heave fell short, Marion (21-10 overall) had claimed a dramatic, perhaps unlikely, 42-41 victory at Yellowjacket Arena that sends the Lady Pats to the semifinals for just the fourth time in school history, and for a second straight season.
"I was just doing what it takes for us to stay here," said Robins. "I looked up at the clock when I caught the ball and it was like 10 seconds left, so I took off. I thought they were going to foul me or I was going to make a shot."
Robins' second game-winner of the season set Marion up with a semifinal contest on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. against Greenwood. The girls and boys semifinal games will be streamed live on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
Neal scored a team-high 18 points and logged nine rebounds against Jacksonville (22-6), while Robins hit for 15 points, including Marion's last 11.
Robins and Neal's heroics helped Marion overcome 32 percent shooting, including a chilly one of 15 from three-point range.
"I was glad Jessica took the initiative. She took it up a notch in the fourth quarter when she had that steal and layup," said Marion coach Shunda Johnson, who has guided Marion to all four semifinals in school history. "I'm excited that she made it, but I'm not surprised that she made it."
The game opened as an old-school defensive slugfest in the first quarter as neither team could establish much flow on offense. When Neal hit a baseline jumper with 1:29 left in the opening stanza, Marion led 6-5, but wouldn't lead again until Robins' decisive layup. Jacksonville led 7-6 after the first.
Jacksonville embarked on a 10-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters to earn its first nine-point lead of the night at 15-6 with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter.
That's when Neal took over, scoring six straight Marion points, including a layup that got the Lady Pats within 20-16 with 1:38 left in the first half, but Jacksonville pushed ahead 23-16 at the break.
The Lady Titans led 35-26 with 2:20 left before Neal hit a layup and Jackson split a pair of free throws to get Marion within 35-29 after three quarters.
But Marion's defense held the line in the fourth quarter, limiting Jacksonville to three of nine shooting from the field while forcing five turnovers.
"Our plan coming in was to contain No. 11, (Da'Kariya) Jackson," said Johnson. "She made some shots because she's just a player, but overall our defense was strong."
A Neal stickback and a pair of Robins free throws got Marion within 35-33 with 6:25 left in the fourth. Jacksonville led 41-35 with 2:52 remaining when Robins connected on Marion's first and only three-pointer of the night.
Robins got the Lady Pats within one on a layup with 58.4 remaining in regulation to set up the final dramatics.
