MARION OUTLASTS LAKESIDE, ADVANCES TO QUARTERS

SHERIDAN --- Jayden Forrest released the ball at the top of his form as a Hot Springs Lakeside defender attempted to challenge his shot. Forrest, who had already hit a pair of three-pointers in this game, wasted little time pulling the trigger on this shot from bonus range. As the Marion junior guard's shot whispered through the net, Forrest got back on defense to wild applause. It was that type of night for Forrest and his Marion teammates, which rolled past Lakeside 65-41 in the first round of the Class 5A state basketball tournament at Yellowjacket Arena in Sheridan. Marion (24-7 overall) advances to the quarterfinals for the fifth time in six seasons when it plays 5A West champion Russellville Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. That game will be streamed live on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app. Forrest scored a game-high 21 points while dishing out five assists. Freshman Terrion Burgess hit for nine points and five rebounds. Ryan Forrest added nine points, while Donnie Cheers scored eight. Forrest, who made four three-pointers on the night, started the scoring with a triple with 7:15 left in the first quarter, but Lakeside immediately hit the Pats with a 7-0 run to lead 7-3 with 5:20 left in the first quarter. Jayden Forrest sparked an 11-2 Marion run by hitting a jump shot, converting a three-point play and hitting another shot from deep as the Patriots took a 14-9 lead with 2:59 remaining in the first. Marion led 21-11 after the first quarter. Eight Patriots scored in the second quarter as Marion expanded its lead from 10 to 15 points at halftime. Ryan Forrest started the scoring parade with a free throw before he set up a Jalen White layup with an assist. Jayden Forrest canned a three-pointer to push the Pats ahead 27-10 with 5:33 left in the second. That's when Martavius Davis took over, dishing an assist to Kayden Nesbitt for a layup before converting a layup of his own. Lyndell Buckingham scored in the paint before Burgess hit a mid-range jump shot. When Zyon Parnell beat the halftime buzzer with a layup, Marion led 37-22 at the break. Marion shot the lights out in the first half, making 15 of its 25 field goals (60 percent), while forcing 10 Lakeside turnovers. Cheers took center stage in the third quarter, recording a steal at midcourt, which he quickly converted into a layup. The junior then came up with one of his four offensive rebounds in the frame and converted it for a 43-29 lead. Cheers gave Marion its largest lead of the night when he scored a layup for a 49-31 lead late in the third quarter. The Pats led 51-35 after three quarters. Marion took its first 20-point lead midway through the fourth quarter when Nesbitt hit a layup for a 59-39 lead. Jayden Forrest made four straight free throws and Buckingham made a layup to cap the scoring.
