PAIR OF PATRIOTS SIGN WITH WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY

Marion senior football players Donavin Brewer and Travis Stafford signed Wednesday afternoon with Willam Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Brewer and Stafford are the fifth and sixth Patriots to sign a college scholarship in February. Brewer started games in 2021 at linebacker and safety, and he offered depth at receiver and tailback on offense. Brewer exits Marion with 79 career tackles, four interceptions, and a pair of sacks. “Him being able to move around allowed us to play our best 11 players on the field,” said Marion coach Lance Clark. “When you have a versatile piece like DB on your team, it opens up more opportunities for other guys and helps you play the matchups.” The three-year letterman likely starts his career at William Penn as a nickel safety, but Clark believes that he could wind up elsewhere in time. “Brewer is an interesting case because I don't believe he's done growing,” said Marion coach Lance Clark. “Young men can grow until they're 21 or 22. If he gets bigger he could be a big, athletic linebacker, or running back, or receiver. I think ultimately it depends on which scheme the school wants to run.” Stafford started the last season and a half of his varsity career on the offensive line, including 13 starts at guard in 2021, when the Pats powered to a second consecutive state semifinal berth. “He played about half the time two years ago, on a unit that wasn't seen as the strength of the team,” said Clark. “This year, he was really a stabilizing force for us. Through his energy and swagger, Travis became kind of a leader for us. That allowed the other guys to fall in line.” William Penn coaches project Stafford at fullback immediately, but “I could see Travis maybe shifting to the defensive line,” said Clark. “He's a confident kid, and that confidence and intensity could carry him through his college career.”
