LADY PATS SWEEP SEARCY
Facing at least two weeks without their leading scorer and rebounder did little last Friday night to deter the Marion Lady Patriots.
Marion (17-7 overall, 7-2 5A East) hit Searcy (2-22, 0-10) with a 10-0 run Friday night at Fidelity Bank Arena and never looked back for a 64-40 victory.
Three Lady Pats hit double digits against Searcy, led by Alyse Holliman's 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Keira Neal hit for 12, while Ny'Asia Jackson poured in 10 points and five assists. The contributions were needed in the absence of senior forward Daedrianna Cail, who is expected to miss at least four games with a foot injury suffered last Tuesday night at Nettleton.
Marion has now won 13 of the last 14 meetings with Searcy, and lead the all-time series 17-11 since 2006-2007.
Marion's full-court press stymied Searcy from the jump, forcing nine Lady Lion turnovers in the first quarter, many of which led directly to points. All 10 of Marion's points during the opening 10-0 run came in the paint as Holliman scored on a putback and a layup, Falencia Selvy hit a layup and a short jumper, and Jessica Robins converted a layup. The Lady Pats led 13-6 after the first quarter.
Searcy punched back in the second quarter, connecting on a pair of three-pointers, and working with seven points twice in that frame, before Selvy registered the last bucket of the first half for a 27-18 Marion halftime advantage.
The Lady Pats opened the second half in similar fashion to the first half, overwhelming Searcy with a 14-2 run to take control of the game for good.
Even more impressive than the run itself was the fact that five Lady Pats scored during that stretch, and Marion took its largest lead of the game (41-20) when Jackson came up with a steal near midcourt and converted a layup at the other end with 4:12 left in the stanza. Jackson connected on a three-pointer with less than 17 seconds remaining to give Marion a 51-30 lead after three.
Marion travels Tuesday night to Batesville. The girls game will tip around 6 p.m., followed by the guys game around 7:30. Both contests will be streamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
