Greene Co. Tech rallies past Marion

GREENE CO. TECH RALLIES PAST MARION

PARAGOULD --- Despite taking an 11-point lead early in the fourth period, Marion's expertise in close games ran out last Friday night at Eagle Arena. Greene County Tech reentered the conference title hunt by dominating the fourth quarter to turn away Marion 53-47, snapping the Lady Patriots' eight-game winning streak. Marion (14-6 overall, 4-1 5A East) took a 45-34 lead with 7:38 left in the fourth quarter, but managed just one field goal the rest of the game as the Lady Eagles forced 10 Marion turnovers the rest of regulation. The Lady Pats trailed 25-20 at halftime, and 34-31 with 2:51 left in the third period before Marion closed that stanza on a 12-0 run. The spurt began in earnest when Alyse Holliman came up with an offensive rebound, drew a foul, and connected on a pair of free throws. Sophomore guard Ny'Asia Jackson recorded two steals near halfcourt and turned each into points with layups to give Marion a 37-34 lead with 1:27 left in the third. A Daedrianna Cail layup gave Marion a 40-34 lead late in the stanza before Jackson logged another steal and beat the third-period buzzer with a half-court heave that gave the Lady Pats a dramatic 43-34 lead entering the fourth quarter. Marion pushed ahead 45-34 on a Cail stickback with 7:38 left in regulation, but the hosts immediately responded with a 15-0 run. Greene County Tech earned a 49-45 lead following a Sierra Floyd three-pointer with 2:57 remaining before Kiera Neal connected on a jump shot with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter to get the Lady Pats within 49-47. But Marion wouldn't score again, as Tech made its last four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Cail paced Marion with 14 points while senior Jessica Robins hit for 12, and Neal added eight. Kylie Stokes pumped in a game-high 22 points while Sierrah Floyd added nine. Marion returns home to Fidelity Bank Arena Tuesday night to play Paragould at approximately 6 p.m. The girls and boys varsity game will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
