Marion tops Parkview in non-league tilt

MARION TOPS PARKVIEW IN NON-LEAGUE TILT

It can be difficult to overcome 25 turnovers, and a game-high 31 points and eight rebounds from the opposition's top player. However, Marion (4-2 overall) scored 20 transition points and won on the glass 37-29 as a team Tuesday night to take down a 59-52 non-conference victory over Little Rock Parkview at Fidelity Bank Arena. Marion junior forward Kiera Neal paced the Pats with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Alyse Holliman hit for 11 points and eight boards. Seniors Jessica Robins and Daedrianna Cail poured in nine and eight points, respectively. Parkview got 31 points and eight boards from junior post girl Tyra Robinson, while junior Jasmine Davis added 12 and Jada Page hit for nine. Despite the victory, Marion coach Shunda Johnson vowed her crew clean up the turnovers and decision-making down the stretch that kept Parkview in the game until late. “We have to work on situational basketball all day tomorrow,” said Johnson. “Because we have to learn how to play ahead with no shot clock. We have to learn how to run our offense with confidence, box out, and secure rebounds, and just play smart, winning basketball. We need to increase our basketball IQ.” This contrast of styles was evident early on, as Marion was able to score easy baskets off rebounds, and outlet passes, while Parkview proved more deliberate behind the post prowess of Robinson, who scored 12 first-quarter points. Four Marion cagers scored in the opening frame, and the hosts led 13-10 after eight minutes. Marion continued to connect on high-percentage shots in the second quarter, leading by as many as seven points in that frame (17-10) following a Cail layup with 6:40 remaining. A pair of Page layups got Parkview within 17-16 with 4:32 in the second, but Holliman poured in five points, while Robins hit for four during a 9-1 run that pushed Marion back in front 28-19. Parkview finished the first with a 7-1 run to close the half trailing just 28-26. Parkview picked up where it left off in the third quarter, scoring five of the first seven points, to take a 31-30 lead on a Robinson free throw with 6:30 remaining in the frame. However, Neal responded with a short jumper, a free throw, and a highlight-worthy steal and layup to give Marion a 38-31 lead with 4:15 in the third to force a Parkview timeout. A pair of Holliman free throws and a Neal jumper gave Marion its largest lead of the night at 41-31 before the hosts settled for a 42-37 lead after three. Marion protected its lead in the fourth quarter by connecting on seven of 11 free throws and shooting a tidy six of 11 from the field. Holliman scored Marion's first five points of the final frame, the last deuce of that run coming on a pair of free throws with 3:41 left for a 47-41 lead. A Cail layup immediately preceded Ny'Asia Jackson coming up with a steal and registering an old-fashioned three-point play for a 54-47 Marion lead with 1:46 remaining. Robins connected on three of four free throws down the stretch to help Marion clinch victory. “We wanted to outrebound, and outscore them from the free-throw line,” said Johnson. Marion's boys and girls teams play at the Trojan Invitational in Hot Springs on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Marion's girls return home to host Class 6A power Conway Tuesday night.
