FS NORTHSIDE SLIPS PAST MARION

The Marion Lady Patriots and defending Class 6A state champion Fort Smith Northside swapped haymakers through overtime Tuesday night at Fidelity Bank Arena. In the end, the Lady Bears scored the game's final six points to pull out a 66-63 road victory. Marion (3-2 overall) senior Daedrianna Cail poured in a team-high 14 points to go with nine rebounds, while Taylor Little hit for 12 points. Sophomore guard Ny'Asia Jackson pumped in 10 points. For Northside (2-0) Erianna Gooden popped Marion for a game-high 22 points to go with six boards. "Yonni" Releford pumped in 18 points, while Khassidy Warr rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points. "We had to do a much better job, collectively, of boxing out," said Marion coach Shunda Johnson. "In the first half, we did not do a good job covering their three-point shooters. We watched film Sunday and Monday on how to defend shooters. We knew the score, and we knew the numbers, we just kind of walked out there." Northside proved accurate from distance in the first two quarters, connecting on four of 12 shots from beyond the arc. The Lady Bears rode a 6-0 run to cap the first quarter for a 16-10 advantage after the first eight minutes. Northside's final triple of the first half gave the Lady Bears a 31-22 advantage that the Class 6A power would take to the lockers for halftime. The momentum shifted to start the third quarter when Marion attacked Northside with an aggressive full-court press. The tactic paid instant dividends as the Lady Pats forced nine Northside turnovers in the frame, and scored the first nine points of the stanza to tie the game and force a Lady Bear timeout. A Little free throw gave Marion its first lead (34-33) since 8-7 in the first quarter, and the Lady Pats by as many as five when Jackson scored on a layup late in the third quarter. Marion led 44-41 after three frames. "We knew Northside liked to press people, and we wanted to see if that was something they could handle," said Johnson. "Our girls bought in, we were able turn them over and convert, so that was big for us." The Marion lead swelled to 50-41 early in the fourth quarter following a Jessica Robins free throw, but that's when Northside began its rally. The Lady Bears ripped off an 8-0 run, all on free throws, to pull within 50-49 with 4:20 remaining in regulation. Northside took the lead back on a Karys Washington three-pointer with 1:46 left. A Gooden free throw gave Northside a 56-54 lead with 28.6 seconds remaining, and Marion appeared to be in desperation mode when the Lady Pats committed a turnover on the ensuing possession. Instead, Jackson came up with a steal and a layup to tied the game at 56 with 11.9 seconds remaining to force overtime. Little gave the Lady Pats a lift in the extra period, scoring the first four points on layups, the second coming with 3:01 remaining. Cail scored on a floater with 1:38 left for a 63-60 Marion advantage. However, Cail fouled out on the ensuing Northside possession and the Lady Bears made four of their final six charities in overtime to pull away for a 66-63 conquest. Marion hosts Little Rock Parkview Tuesday, November 30 for a pair of games, beginning at 5 p.m. The varsity game will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
