MARION LOGS MERCY-RULE PLAYOFF WIN OVER RUSSELLVILLE
The Marion Patriots produced a dominating defensive effort and racked up several big plays last Friday night to rip Russellville 42-20 at Premier Bank in the first round of the Class 6A state football playoffs.
In the first meeting of Marion and Russellville on the gridiron, the Patriots (5-6 overall) limited Russellville (5-6) to a single first-half first down (via penalty), to win the eighth state playoff game in the modern era (since 1970). Marion led 42-0 late in the third quarter.
"Look, it's a big deal to win in the playoffs, and get to the quarterfinals," said Marion coach Lance Clark. "I thought we dominated the line of scrimmage tonight for the most part, which is what we want to hang our hats on. What was really good was the defense came out sharp and stifled them from the jump."
Senior tailback Cam Anderson carried 27 times for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Senior quarterback Ben Gerrard completed seven of 15 passes for 234 yards and a score. Gerrard's favorite target against Russellville was junior receiver Donnie Cheers, who snagged four passes for 159 yards, including a 37-yard score.
The Marion defense forced three turnovers and did not allow a first down on the first six Russellville drives.
Marion advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight season, this Friday night at outright 6A West champion Benton (9-1). Marion is 2-0 all time against Benton, beating the Panthers 42-33 in the 2011 playoffs, and the Pats accepted a forfeit (Covid-19 quarantines) last year in the opening round of last season's playoffs.
Marion marched 95 yards in 11 plays with the opening kickoff, culminating with Anderson's 6-yard TD plunge with 7:48 left in the opening quarter.
Sophomore defensive back Amari Lee intercepted his second pass in as many weeks on Russellville's opening drive on second quarter, setting Marion up first and 10 at the Cyclone 17-yard line. Anderson scored six plays later from 3 yards out for a 13-0 Marion advantage, which doubled as the score after the first quarter.
The Pats went back to work in the second quarter, driving 76 yards in nine plays, capped off by Gerrard's scoring strike in the south end zone of Premier Bank Stadium to Cheers from 37 yards out.
Senior linebacker and Team Captain Donte Moore recovered a Russellville fumble at the Cyclone 16-yard line later in the second quarter. Marion wasted little time pushing ahead 27-0 when Anderson ran three times for 16 yards, including a 5-yard dash for his third score.
Russellville drove 72 yards with the second-half kickoff into the Marion red zone before QB Gavin Graham broke the pocket and lost a fumble, where Marion's Columbus London recovered at the Patriot 3-yard line.
It took Marion four plays to turn the fumble into points, as Anderson covered the last 54 yards on a first-down run for his fourth score, and a 33-0 Marion lead. Gerrard found Cheers in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion and the 35-0 margin triggered the sportsmanship rule.
Russellville dented the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter when Trevion Taylor recovered a Marion fumble and returned it 44 yards for a score. Graham fired a pair of TD passes later on to account for Russellville's 20 points, but all of the scoring came against Marion's backup defense.
"I thought our guys communicated so well tonight, as well as we have all year," said Clark. "I thought our guys took instruction really well this week. We gave an awesome effort."
Marion's game Friday night at Benton will kick off at 7 p.m. It will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
