PATS MUZZLE BULLDOGS, ADVANCE TO QUARTERS

The Marion Patriots have been just about unbeatable since a season-opening loss in August at Collierville, Tennessee. The White Hall Bulldogs found out the hard way. Marion overwhelmed the No. 4 seed from the 5A South yesterday in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament at Fidelity Bank Arena, dispatching White Hall in straight sets (25-8, 25-7 and 25-11). Winners of 26 straight matches and having dropped only six sets all season, Marion (26-1 overall, 14-0 5A East) advances to the quarterfinals to play defending state champion Greenwood (21-12, 13-1) Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. Marion's 26 consecutive victories is the longest winning streak in school history. "I'm extremely happy and proud of our team tonight," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "I thought our serve/receive was spot on and our defense nailed their digs." Marion senior Kora Wilson tallied 12 kills, 11 digs and four aces against White Hall while Anna Caroline Fesmire dished out 10 assists and nine kills with nine digs. Arkansas-Little Rock commit Daedrianna Cail racked up 11 kills while Kiara Ledezma posted three kills. Senior twins Lauryn and Madison Keith paced Marion with 18 assists and 16 digs, respectively. Emerson Miller stacked 15 digs. While Madison Allison tallied a pair of kills. Hosting the state volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, Marion raced from the gates like a scalded dog. The Patriots scored the first nine points of the first set, including three aces by senior Kora Wilson and a kill from Madison Allison. Marion's largest lead in the opening set was 22-6 following a Wilson kill. Wilson closed out White Hall when she logged a kill off a Fesmire assist. White Hall earned an early 2-1 lead in the second set before the Pats ignited again. Marion scored 16 straight points, forcing a pair of White Hall timeouts. Cail racked up five kills in the run while Lauryn Keith befuddled White Hall by serving four aces. Fesmire dished four assists, logged three kills and blocked two shots during the stretch. White Hall refused to back down facing elimination in the third set. The Bulldogs stayed within two points at 8-6 before another patented Marion run. Seven straight Marion points was started by a pair of Wilson kills and an ace and two kills from Ledezma and one from Allison. White Hall called for time when Lauryn Keith served her sixth ace of the match to give Marion a 15-7 lead. Marion led by as many as 13 points three times before scoring the last three points to win 25-11. Marion's quarterfinal tilt with Greenwood starts at 6 p.m. and the contest will be streamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
