PATS RALLY PAST ZEBRAS

It was a tale of two Marion defenses Friday night at Premier Bank Stadium. But once the Patriot stop troops locked in with proper intensity, Marion was able to pull away for a 38-24 homecoming victory over the Pine Bluff Zebras. Offensively, Marion (4-4 overall, 3-2 6A East) rolled up 384 yards (265 rushing and 113 passing) against Pine Bluff (1-6, 0-5), including a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns that proved to be the difference. Sophomore quarterback Ashton Gray, who found out he was starting on Thursday in place of the injured Ben Gerrard, completed 11 of 17 passes for 113 yards and a TD. Senior tailback Cam Anderson steamrolled to 148 yards and three TDs. Marion's third straight victory over Pine Bluff improved the Pats' all-time record against the Zebras to 3-2. Marion surrendered 236 yards, three touchdowns and three two-point conversions on Pine Bluff's first three drives as the Zebras bolted to a 24-14 lead after the first quarter. Following the third TD drive, however, Marion surrendered just eight first downs and barred the Zebras from the scoreboard over the final three quarters. "Our front four are as good as anybody, but we come out flat in some key games," said Marion coach Lance Clark. "When the defensive line locks in and starts playing hard and taking it seriously then we can assert ourselves and win some games, but we have to figure out how to maintain that intensity for four quarters." The Marion offense kept serve early on behind Gray's efficient short passing game and the legs of Anderson. Gray sparked Marion's first TD drive by completing all four pass attempts for 39 yards and rushing twice for 25 yards. Anderson culminated the hosts' initial drive with a 5-yard TD run to trim the Pine Bluff lead to 8-7. Gray ran Marion into Pine Bluff territory on the second drive highlighted by a 43-yard run inside the Zebra 5-yard line. Anderson bowled over from 4 yards out on the following play to get the Pats within 16-14 with 2:16 left in the opening quarter. Marion took over at the Pine Bluff 36-yard line midway through the second quarter and faced third and 4 when junior defensive stalwart Brian Weatherspoon converted his first carry of the night into an 18-yard scoring sprint. Dylan Pieri's extra point moved Marion within 24-21, which doubled as the halftime score. Defenses dominated the third period, which featured a pair of punts, a turnover on downs and the game's only turnover on an athletic interception by Pine Bluff's Courtney Crutchfield. Marion tied the score at 24 on Pieri's 31-yard field goal, which culminated a 12-play, 48-yard drive. On the initial play of the fourth quarter, Gray zipped a pass to senior Zion Burnside on a hitch. Burnside made a pair of Zebra defensive backs miss before pulling away for a 41-yard TD that gave Marion its first lead at 30-24. Following a Pine Bluff three and out, Marion sophomore Matthew Kearney returned a punt 44 yards into Zebra territory to set the Pats up first and 10 at the opposing 36-yard line. Anderson covered the last 32 yards for the game-icing TD, which spanned 19 yards on third and three. He added the two-point conversion for a 38-24 lead with 8:18 left in regulation. Pine Bluff's last two drives entered Marion's red zone before the Pats denied the Zebras. Marion's 38 points are a season high, despite playing from behind the first three quarters and with Gray having less than two days to prepare for Pine Bluff. "We put that offense in on Thursday," said Clark. "It was simple, and we tried to dress it up but it was simple. We had 38 points on the board, we could have had more, but they kept us in the game early on." Marion plays at Sheridan Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. That game will be streamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
