Pats earn 20th victory

PATS EARN 20TH VICTORY

BROOKLAND --- The Marion Patriots hit the road last night to take on a projected Class 4A state tournament team. When they arrived, the Patriots did just about everything right in a straight-set victory (25-14, 25-14 and 25-12). Marion's 20th consecutive victory improved the Patriots to 20-1 overall and 10-0 in the 5A East. The Patriots can clinch a top two state tournament seed on Tuesday with a victory over Paragould. "I'm super thrilled with how we played tonight," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "We sustained a very high level of play the entire match. No lulls or drops in energy. This has been one of the most fun times I've had coaching and we've had a lot of fun in the past." Senior libero Madison Keith paced Marion with 24 digs while senior Emerson Miller logged 16 digs. Anna Caroline Fesmire recorded a team-high 20 assists, posted six kills and served three aces. Daedrianna Cail tallied a team-high 15 kills and six stuffs. Kora Wilson tallied six kills served two aces and logged one emphatic block. Kiara Ledezma stacked four kills. Juniors Kiah Rucker (seven kills and four blocks) and Madison Allison (three kills) rounded out the scoring. Marion led 11-10 in the opening set when Ledezma, Cail and Fesmire recorded kills as Marion scored four of five points to force a Brookland timeout. Fesmire set Cail for three straight kills following the stoppage to push the Patriot lead to 18-11. Fesmire and Cail accounted for six of Marion's final seven points to help clinch the 25-14 victory in the first set. Brookland and Marion split the first 14 points of the second set when the Patriots took advantage of a pair of Bearcat hitting errors while Rucker and Allison posted kills. When Wilson blocked a Brookland kill attempt for a 11-7 Marion lead, Brookland called for time. Marion scored six of the next seven points as Rucker and Cail posted blocks, Fesmire served an ace and Wilson logged a pair of kills. Rucker and Wilson logged a pair of kills to help Marion earn a second straight 25-14 set victory. Brookland scored the first two points of the third set and led 5-4 when Marion took off on another run. The surge started with Cail, who posted a kill, served an ace and blocked a Brookland kill attempt for a point on three straight plays. Fesmire dished assists to Ledezma, Wilson and Rucker as Marion earned an 11-6 lead. By the time Rucker posted a kill and a block for a 15-7 lead, Brookland had to call for time. Cail posted three kills, Wilson logged two and Ledezma posted one down the stretch as Marion won 25-12. Marion hosts Paragould Tuesday at Fidelity Bank Arena for the traditional pink game which will honor breast cancer survivors. The action begins at 4:30 p.m. and the event will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
