PATS SLAM SEARCY

SEARCY --- A time change and its third game in four days did little to deter the Marion Patriots yesterday at Lion Gymnasium. Marion (19-1 overall, 10-0 5A-East) won its 19th straight game last night, slipping the Searcy Lions in straight sets (25-11, 25-8, 25-22). The Patriots remain in first place in the 5A East, but they face a crucial pair of games next week as they play host to Paragould on Tuesday and travel to Jonesboro on Thursday. Jonesboro has won the last four conference titles. Marion senior Kora Wilson served a team-high six aces, posted nine kills and recorded 17 digs. Anna Caroline Fesmire dished a team-high 21 assists and tallied seven kills. Daedrianna Cail amassed a team-high 13 kills and stuffed four blocks. Madison Keith tallied a team-best 24 digs. Freshman Maggie Miller handed out 10 assists while senior Kiara Ledezma stacked five kills. Senior Emerson Miller, sister to Maggie, recorded 14 digs. Searcy scored the first three points of the opening set before Marion asserted itself. Cail, an Arkansas-Little Rock volleyball commit, recorded points on six of Marion's first nine points for a 9-4 advantage. Ledezma posted a pair of kills for a 12-5 Marion lead that forced a Searcy timeout. Wilson got going later in the first set, recording kills on three of six Marion points, the last for a 20-9 lead. Fesmire found Wilson for a kill to lock in the 25-11 Patriot victory. Wilson's tear continued into the second set when the senior all-state performer served the Patriots to 11 consecutive points. Wilson served four aces and posted a pair of kills during the run. Fesmire and Ledezma logged a pair of kills apiece to grow Marion's lead to 18-5 and force a Searcy timeout. Wilson played closer in the second set, converting three Maggie Miller passes into kills for a 25-8 conquest. But Searcy didn't roll over in the third set as the Lions led by as many as five points on three occasions, the latest at 13-8. Marion hit the comeback trail with some stifling defensive play from Emerson Miller and Keith and two kills apiece from Cail, Fesmire and senior Riley Jackson. An ace by Emerson Miller knotted the score at 15. Searcy took advantage of a pair of Marion hitting errors for a 19-16 lead, which forced a Patriot timeout. Following the stoppage, Fesmire set Wilson and Cail for kills before a Searcy error gave the visitors a 20-19 lead. Junior Kelsey Baker served an ace and posted a kill before a Searcy serving error pushed the decision to the Patriots. Marion plays a non-conference game Monday night at Brookland before returning home to host league foe Paragould Tuesday night. The Patriots play at Jonesboro Thursday night. All of those games will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
