MARION COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF NETTLETON
One of the defining traits of the Marion volleyball team so far in 2021 has been an extraordinarily deep roster with many contributors.
That theme continued Tuesday night at Fidelity Bank Arena when senior setter Lauryn Keith missed Marion's second meeting with Nettleton.
Enter freshman Maggie Miller, who dished a team-high 23 assists and served a pair of aces in her first significant varsity action as Marion (18-1 overall, 9-0 5A East) downed Nettleton in straight sets (25-21, 25-11 and 25-14).
"My hats off to Maggie Miller," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "She went in there and played a heck of a match. She was on the big stage and showed up big time."
Senior Anna Caroline Fesmire showed out against Nettleton, recording 14 kills, dishing 12 assists and serving a pair of aces. Senior Daedrianna Cail pounded a team-high 15 kills with a pair of blocks. Senior Kora Wilson tallied nine kills and served three aces. Senior Madison Keith stacked a team-high 27 digs and served three aces. Senior Kiara Ledezma logged five kills while classmate Riley Jackson tallied three kills. Senior Emerson Miller recorded 17 digs and served an ace. Junior Kiah Rucker stacked six kills and blocked two shots.
Marion defeated Nettleton in straight sets earlier this month, but the Raiders proved formidable in the opening set last night. The league rivals entered the late stages of the set tied at 20. A Rucker block preceded a Maggie Miller-to-Fesmire connection for a 23-21 Marion lead, which forced a Nettleton timeout. Madison Keith set Fesmire for a three-point advantage and a Nettleton hitting error gave the hosts a 25-21 win.
The Pats bolted from the blocks in the second set behind Fesmire's deft passing. The decorated senior lofted assists to Jackson, Wilson, Cail and Ledezma as Marion streaked to a 6-1 lead. With Marion leading 13-4, Maggie Miller displayed her passing prowess again, setting Cail, Ledezma, Fesmire and Ledezma for kills for a 17-4 advantage. The Marion lead reached 21-6 when Wilson took over, recording a pair of kills and two aces to clinch the 25-11 conquest in the second stanza.
Cail sparked Marion in the third set, logging three kills and a block to stake Marion to a 5-2 lead. Fesmire and Rucker logged two kills apiece before an Emerson Miller ace gave the Pats a 10-4 lead and forced a Nettleton timeout. The lead reached 18-8 on the second of back-to-back Fesmire-to-Cail connections and the Marion lead topped at 23-10 following a Cail block. Fesmire's final kill closed out the 25-14 set for Marion.
"I'm so proud of my girls for coming together and playing as a team," said Beasley. "I'm loving coaching this group and being part of something special."
Marion continues its trip through conference play Thursday afternoon at Searcy. The varsity plays at 4 p.m. That match will be livestreamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
