PATS WIN 17TH STRAIGHT GAME
The Marion Patriots fought past fall break and the Jonesboro Westside Warriors last night at Fidelity Bank Arena to notch its 17th consecutive victory.
Marion improved to 17-1 overall after topping Westside in straight sets (25-12, 25-19 and 25-12). The Patriots look to improve their 5A-East-best 8-0 conference mark Tuesday night at home against Nettleton.
Seniors Anna Caroline Fesmire and Lauryn Keith paced Marion with 13 assists apiece. Fesmire chipped in with nine kills. Senior Daedrianna Cail, who committed earlier this month to play volleyball at Arkansas-Little Rock, paced the Pats with 17 kills. Senior Madison Keith registered a team-high 21 digs while senior Kora Wilson logged 18 digs. Wilson added six kills and served a pair of aces Junior Kiah Rucker posted three kills and three blocks while junior Madison Allison posted four kills. Senior Emerson Miller stacked 13 digs.
“I thought we played hard considering it's Monday during fall break,” said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. “There are always going to be things that we need to work on, but I'm happy with our overall performance.”
The Patriots showed little fatigue following a marathon Saturday in Hot Springs when they won the Hot Springs Lakeside Tournament. Marion scored the first five points of the opening set against Westside, keyed by kills from Cail and Allison and an ace from Wilson. When the Marion lead reached 9-2 following a pair of Cail kills, Westside called for time.
Fesmire took over later in the first set, accounting for seven of eight Marion points by kills or assists to push the Pats lead to 20-7. Lauryn Keith served an ace and dished assists on the last two Marion points to finish out a 25-12 Marion victory.
But Westside proved resilient in the second set as the Warriors split the first 16 points of the stanza. Marion pulled ahead for good when Lauryn Keith set Fesmire, Allison and Wilson for kills and Cail and Rucker blocked shots at the net during a stretch where Marion earned an 18-12 advantage. Lauryn Keith and Fesmire carried the Patriots to victory following the stoppage, teaming up four times for points as the Pats earned a 25-19 win.
Cail detonated out of the gates in the third and decisive set, posting kills on Marion's first points. Lauryn Keith dealt seven assist in the third set alone, her fifth one finding Fesmire for a 9-4 lead that forced a Westside timeout.
The Patriots took advantage of six Westside hitting errors in a span of 11 points and when Wilson served an ace that was not touched, Marion led 18-9. Allison, Wilson, Cail, Fesmire and Rucker registered kills down the stretch as Marion coasted to a 25-12 victory in the third set.
“I thought our serve/receive and our serving was spot on,” said Beasley.
Marion hosts Nettleton tonight at Fidelity Bank Arena. The night begins at 4:30 p.m. With the junior high junior varsity followed by junior high varsity action. That contest will be streamed on MarionPatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Association mobile app.
