MARION THROWS BLOCK PARTY AT GCT

PARAGOULD --- There was very little music involved last night during Marion's contest at Greene County Tech, but it was a block party nonetheless. The Patriots (10-1 overall, 8-0 5A-East) stayed active all night at the net, blocking more than 10 shots that led directly to points in a three-set victory (25-19, 25-19 and 25-13) at Eagle Arena. Senior Daedrianna Cail and junior Kiah Rucker came up with four blocks apiece while senior Anna Caroline Fesmire stuffed three. Cail logged a team-high 16 kills and Fesmire handed out a team-high 14 assists with seven kills. Senior Lauryn Keith dealt 13 assists and served a team-high three aces. Senior Madison Keith, twin to Lauryn, registered a team-high 24 digs. Senior Kora Wilson pounded eight kills and handled 17 digs. Marion's second victory this year over Greene County Tech gave the Pats their best start in league play since 2014. "We're happy with a road win in three sets," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "We were able to use our size and strength to outlast a very energetic Tech team." Marion scored the first three points of the opening set behind Wilson, who earlier Thursday won a doubles tennis match against Batesville, started the scoring with a kill before Fesmire set Cail for consecutive kills. The Patriot advantage swelled to 9-3 when Lauryn Keith served an ace and dished a pair of assists to Cail and senior Kiara Ledezma. But Tech weathered the early storm and trimmed the lead to 19-14 following a pair of kills. That's when Cail tallied three kills, while Wilson and Ledezma recorded kills of their own to push Marion to a 25-19 opening-set victory. The Eagles set the tone in the second set by attacking the net and displaying some scrappy defense to claim a 17-16 lead. That's when Fesmire dished an assist to Rucker for a kill, before Wilson and junior Meredith Williams registered kills for a 20-17 Marion advantage, which forced a Tech timeout. The Pats scored the first three points following the stoppage to claim a 23-17 lead and force the Eagles' final stoppage of the set. A Cail kill clinched the 25-19 Marion conquest. Marion's dominance at the net highlighted the third set. Cail logged points on three of four Marion tallies for a 5-2 advantage. Lauryn Keith took over from there, serving a pair of assists and dishing four assists as the Pats pushed ahead 10-3. Fesmire, Rucker and Cail combined to block seven Tech kill attempts down the stretch as the Pats pulled away for the 25-13 final tally. "I thought we played cleaner, with fewer errors (in the third set)," said Beasley. "We also took control at the net." Marion plays Saturday at a tournament at Hot Springs Lakeside. The Patriots play 5A West member Russellville at 10 a.m., Lake Hamilton at 11 a.m. and Beebe at 1 p.m. Marion beat Beebe in three sets in August. The Patriots host Jonesboro Westside Monday night at Fidelity Bank Arena.
