MARION BUSTS BATESVILLE
BATESVILLE--- Facing a one-set deficit in front of a raucous crowd last night at Pioneer Gymnasium, the Marion Patriots got contributions from their entire roster to rally for a four-set win over league foe Batesville (19-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21).
Marion (9-1 overall, 7-0 5A-East) finishes its first tour through league play unbeaten, including three straight wins against potential state tournament opponents Jonesboro, West Memphis and Batesville.
"I can't say how proud I am of our girls tonight," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "We pulled off a tough road win against a really well-coached team in a difficult environment. We came together as a team and pulled off a crucial win."
That crucial win seemed in doubt during the opening set as the teams split the first 30 points before Batesville took advantage of a pair of Marion hitting errors for a 17-15 advantage to force a Patriot timeout.
Batesville responded with points on five of the next six opportunities for a 21-16 advantage. Three more Marion errors gave the Pioneers a 25-19 victory, which snapped Marion's run of 24 consecutive set wins since the team's only loss in August at Collierville, Tennessee.
Beasley shuffled her lineup prior to the second set, inserting junior Meredith Williams on the front row and tabbing freshman Alexa Shinaberry to serve.
Shinaberry's first seven serves scored for Marion while Williams registered a block and a dig, which led to a Patriot point.
But Batesville hung around in set No. 2, taking a 13-12 lead on a Marion error. That's when Marion seniors Kora Wilson, Anna Caroline Fesmire and Daedrianna Cail took over, accounting for 10 of the Pats' next 12 points for a 19-15 advantage to force a Batesville timeout.
The stoppage sparked the Pioneers as the hosts embarked on a 7-2 run for a 22-20 lead to force a Marion timeout.
Marion wouldn't be denied from there, scoring five of the last six points to pull away for a crucial win. Cail served to ace to give the Pats the lead for good at 24-23 while Wilson put down a kill to clinch the 25-23 set victory.
"Everyone on our team is important to our success, even if their roles may differ depending on the night," said Beasley. "But we have a lot of depth and we're able to make adjustments when we need to."
The Pats took an early 8-3 lead in the third set when senior Lauryn Keith dropped a no-look kill to force a Batesville timeout. The Pioneers worked within 10-8 in the third set behind some scrappy defense.
That's when Cail took over, scoring four consecutive points before classmate Kiara Ledezma logged a kill for an 18-13 Marion margin.
Fesmire dragged the Pats to the finish line in the third set, accounting for five of the final seven Patriot points in a 25-21 win that left Marion one set away from victory.
Cail detonated from the gates in the fourth set, racking up four of the first seven points for a 5-1 Marion lead. Fesmire and Keith logged kills to give Marion a 9-2 lead, which forced Batesville's first timeout of the set.
Keith tallied a kill, served an ace and dished out a pair of assists before a Wilson ace swelled Marion's lead to 18-9.
The Pioneers got within 21-15 to force Marion's first timeout and the Batesville run cut even closer at 22-20 for the Pats' second timeout.
Keith set junior Kiah Rucker and Fesmire for kills before Fesmire's second ace of the night clinched Marion's 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Marion travels to Greene County Tech on Thursday night. The Patriots downed the Eagles in three sets in August. That contest will be streamed on marionpatriots.com and on the Marion Patriots Activities Network app.
