PATS BOUNCE BLUE DEVILS

Prior to last night's home date with Crittenden County and conference rival West Memphis, Marion public address announcer Tyler Bennett wowed fans at Fidelity Bank Arena by cutting off the lights and using a spotlight to illuminate the Patriot starters. After opening the game with a lights-out display, Marion (8-1 overall, 6-0 5A-East) responded by playing almost lights out on the court, sweeping West Memphis in straight sets (25-10, 25-15 and 25-14). The Patriots have won 24 consecutive sets since a season-opening loss at Tennessee volleyball juggernaut Collierville. Senior Daedrianna Cail, an Arkansas-Little Rock volleyball commit, paced Marion with 16 kills while logging four blocks, dishing three assists and serving one ace. Classmate Anna Caroline Fesmire stuffed the stat sheet with 15 kills and 14 assists. Lauryn Keith topped the Pats with 21 assists and a pair of aces. Madison Keith, twin to Lauryn, tallied a team-high 18 digs. Kora Wilson served a team-high three aces and registered six kills and tallied 12 digs. Junior Kiah Rucker pounded eight kills and recorded four blocks. Senior Riley Jackson chipped in three kills and two assists while senior Emerson Miller stacked 10 digs and served a pair of aces. Kiara Ledezma racked up four kills. For West Memphis, senior Ottawa University commit Presley Crader amassed team-highs in assists (11) and kills (nine). Junior Clemisha Pracket tallied nine kills while junior Samantha Holt paced the Blue Devils with 14 digs. "I'm incredibly proud of our girls coming out with the proper intensity tonight after Tuesday (home win over Jonesboro)," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "We played really hard and played really well, for the most part. I can't say how proud of our girls I am right now." There was no Jonesboro hangover, or distraction from Bennett's theatrics, early in the first set as Marion quickly fashioned a 9-4 lead following a Fesmire kill. The lead swelled to 15-5 with Cail taking center stage, blocking a shot for a point, logging a kill off a nifty pass by Lauryn Keith who served consecutive aces to force a West Memphis timeout. Lauryn Keith dealt a pair of aces and handed out a pair of assists as the Marion lead grew to 20-7. Five Patriots accounted for the final five points as the Patriots clinched the 25-10 opening-set margin. But West Memphis responded in the second set behind some strong play from Crader, Holt, Prackett and junior Grace Winter. Prackett racked up five kills early in the second set, the last one tying the set at 13-all, forcing a Marion timeout. Beasley's troops scored the first five points following the stoppage, highlighted by Lauryn Keith serving an ace and setting for three straight Fesmire kills. Fesmire wouldn't be denied down the stretch, registering kills on four of Marion's final six points as the hosts coasted to a 25-15 victory. Marion opened the third set on a mission, scoring nine of the first 10 points to force a West Memphis timeout. Cail accounted for three kills during that run while Ledezma posted a pair of her own. The lead swelled to 10-1 before Prackett logged consecutive kills to get West Memphis back within striking distance. The Blue Devils worked within 12-5 following an Isabella Hinze kill. That's when Rucker logged a pair of kills and two blocks to push the Marion advantage back to 16-7. Fesmire set Cail four times for kills, wrapped around a pair of Wilson aces, to push Marion back in front 23-10. A Lauryn Keith-to-Fesmire connection gave Marion its final point in a 25-14 dub. "After looking at them yesterday at practice, I knew they'd be ready," said Beasley. "When we're passing well, our serve/receive is on and everything is clicking, we're gonna score some points. I thought tonight was a good example of that." Marion continues its run through league play next week, traveling to Batesville on Tuesday and Greene County Tech on Thursday. Those games will be streamed on marionpatriots.com and can be viewed on the Marion Patriots Activities Network mobile app.
