MARION OUTRUNS WYNNE
With each point their classmates distanced between themselves and the visiting Wynne Yellowjackets, The Trench, Marion's student section, grew louder and rowdier.
Cardboard cutouts of seniors Madison Keith, Kiara Ledezma and Anna Caroline Fesmire flashed when they delivered big plays. A pair of flags adorned with the Marion athletic logo waved the entirety of the varsity match until their Patriots (3-1 overall, 1-0 5A-East) dispatched of Wynne in three straight sets (25-17, 15-10 and 25-13) Monday night at Premier Bank Arena.
"I love our student section and the energy they bring," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "We're playing well right now and the girls are having a lot of fun."
The opening set of the non-conference tilt saw Marion claim an early 7-5 lead before the Patriots pushed ahead 10-5 when senior Lauryn Keith lofted a pair of assists for Fesmire kills.
But Wynne wouldn't be deterred. The upset-minded Yellowjackets ripped off four straight points to draw even at 11.
That's when Fesmire took over, setting seniors Meredith Williams and Daedrianna Cail for kills and pounding a kill of her own as Marion leapt to a 16-12 advantage.
"We did start out a little slow in the first half of the first set. We just made a few errors we don't usually make," said Beasley. "But once we found a rhythm we were good to go the rest of the way."
Lauryn Keith took center stage late in the first set, assisting, serving or posting kills on five straight Marion points as the Pats came away with a hard-earned 25-17 victory.
Marion and Wynne split the first six points of the second set before the Pats ripped off nine straight points for a 12-3 advantage. Madison Keith dished five assists and served an ace during that run while registered four kills. The Marion lead swelled to as much as 21-5 in the second set before junior Kiah Rucker and Ledezma logged two kills apiece to help the Pats close out a 25-10 decision.
Marion senior Kora Wilson had a hand in three of the Pats' first four points in the third set as the hosts bolted to a 7-3 advantage. The Patriots took advantage of three Wynne hitting errors to push ahead 15-6 before Madison Keith served an ace and Fesmire handed out assists on three straight plays for a 19-8 Marion bulge. Senior Riley Jackson generated a pair of kills late in the third set before Williams and Fesmire posted the final two points of a 25-13 Marion conquest and the Patriots' ninth consecutive set victory.
"Our mixture of short and deep serves worked well for us tonight," said Beasley. "Our serve, receive and setting was spot on tonight and that helped our hitters do their thing. It was just a complete team effort tonight."
Fesmire stacked a team-high 22 kills against Wynne with 10 assists. Lauryn Keith dished a team-high 17 assists while Cail registered 17 kills.
Marion jumps back into conference action tonight when it plays at Nettleton. That match can be streamed on marionpatriots.com.
