COLLIERVILLE SLIPS MARION IN VOLLEYBALL OPENER
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn.--- It was the Collierville Dragons (6-1 overall) that made the key plays Monday night when it needed them most in a four-set (25-22, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16) victory over Marion (0-1).
"They're a big, fast team and they played well," said Marion coach Lisa Beasley. "I'm not sure we'll see anybody else who plays that fast of a tempo again this year. We like playing them because it's not somebody you see all the time."
Collierville, one of the better volleyball programs in Tennessee, scored the first two points of the opening set and scored five straight to claim a 9-5 lead. The advantage swelled to 13-7 as Beasley burned her first timeout.
After the stoppage, Marion seniors Kora Wilson, Anna Caroline Fesmire and Daedrianna Cail logged kills to ease within four points (15-11), but Collierville responded with a pair of blocks at the net and a Marion hitting error gave the Dragons their largest lead at 18-11.
Wilson served an ace and Fesmire dealt a textbook assist to Cail to highlight a run of five straight Patriot points.
A pair of kills from senior Kiara Ledezma and Cail got Marion within 22-21 and forced Collierville's first timeout of the set. Junior Kiah Rucker registered a kill to tie the game at 22-22, but the Dragons scored the final three points to earn the up-and-down opening stanza.
A see-saw battle launched the second set as neither team claimed more than a two-point advantage until Collierville logged four straight points, and five of six, to push ahead 15-11. Marion burned a timeout, but it was to no avail. Collierville coasted to a 25-16 decision and a 2-0 lead for the match.
The Dragons took a pair of early three-point leads in the third set, but this time the Patriots had the answers. Fesmire tied the set at 7-7 with a resounding kill before Rucker and Wilson gave Marion its first lead (9-8) when they teamed for a block at the net. When Fesmire set Cail for the third time in the third set, Marion led 10-8 and Collierville called for time.
The stoppage helped the Dragons, who responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points. Senior Lauryn Keith helped stifle the run by serving five Marion points, including an ace, for a one-point lead.
Collierville took a 21-20 lead late in the third set to force Marion's final timeout of the frame. Fesmire and Ledezma each recorded kills to pull Marion even at 23-all. Marion took advantage of a pair of Collierville hitting errors to take a 27-25 decision.
Collierville exploded out of the gates in the fourth set, scoring the first four points before Marion responded. Wilson served an ace and Ledezma registered a kill to pull the Pats within 4-3. Marion took its first lead at 6-5 when Keith served an ace. A Fesmire kill swelled Marion's advantage to two points, before Collierville immediately ripped off seven straight points to force a Patriot timeout.
A Wilson kill brought Marion within 18-15, but Collierville closed by scoring eight of the final nine points.
"I proud of how we competed and didn't give up," said Beasley. "We showed a lot of heart and true grit."
Marion is back in action Tuesday night at Beebe. That game will be streamed on marionpatriots.com.
